This well-designed flat is in Bermondsey, within 10 minutes walk of Tower Bridge and 20 minutes from The Tower of London and “the City”. It sleeps 2/5 people with one bedroom, a living room with a comfortable sofa-bed – effectively a second bedroom, and a put-me-up fold-away. There are two full bathrooms. It’s idea for a city worker or for a family wanting to be close to some of London’s most iconic sights.
The historic area of Bermondsey is a lively mixture of old and new. Around the Thames, originally an area of warehouses, the buildings have been converted into modern flats and offices. Along the river, by Tower Bridge, are many good restaurants and one can walk along the Thames River Path either west towards Westminster or east to historic Greenwich.
The flat is 10 minutes walk from your nearest tube station – Bermondsey (Jubilee line) and 12 minutes from London Bridge (Jubilee and Northern line). If you prefer not to walk there are numerous buses (C10, 47, 118 and 381) on the nearby main road to either and beyond..
The flat is on the 5th and 6th floor (yes there is a lift) of one of these converted warehouses – hence the name: Dockhead Wharf. It’s the London pad of a lady who mainly lives in the country but is seriously into her theatre, arts and music so there are lots of books on these subjects.
The entrance door opens onto a small hallway which immediacy leads to the kitchen/dining area. This is also doubles as an informal living area with television and easy chairs. The dining table extends to seat 6. The compact kitchen has all the expected appliances including microwave and dishwasher.
The main bedroom is entered from this space, it has a comfortable 5ft wide double bed. The bathroom on this level, which is off the hallway, has bath with over-shower, basin and loo.
A spiral staircase from a corner of the dining/living area leads up to quite a formal drawing room (18ft6 x 13ft, 5.7m x 4m) comfortably furnished with a two seater sofa, which converts to a bed when this room is used as a second bedroom, two arm-chairs, some side tables and additional chairs. A door in the corner opens onto the second bathroom (an ensuite bathroom when this space is used as a bedroom!) with shower, basin and loo.
There’s also a fold-away bed that can be deployed wherever you like, but the dining area is recommended for an individual sleeping place.
Perhaps the most striking feature of this accommodation is the SW facing terrace accessed though patio doors from the drawing room. It has comfortable seating and total privacy. This is a real plus, a private outdoor space to enjoy a glass or two after a hard day out.
Some notable sites and attractions within 20 minutes walk are Bermondsey Antiques Market (Fridays 6am – 2pm), Borough Market – a foodies heaven, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Tate Modern, The Bridge Theatre, Tower Bridge (yes you can walk across the high level walkway) and The Tower of London. Across the river is Wilton’s Music Hall for more alternative theatre.
