Theed Street (Ref: THD)
Spacious modern open-plan house in picturesque old London.
Don’t bother trying to look-up this area in any guide book – you won’t find it! The Roupell Street conservation area is a well kept secret – charming Victorian cottages, original gas-lamp standards, traditional pubs. No wonder it’s often used as a film set. Colin Firth and Renée Zellweger were spotted here shooting the sequel to Bridget Jones’s Diary.
The house, in adjoining Theed Street, used to be a violin factory! After several re-incarnations it achieved its current form 5 years ago when it was converted into a modern open-plan family home. The street maintains its artistic links: a royal photographer lives next door and the London Festival Orchestra’s rehearsal centre is close by.
Waterloo Station (tube Northern, Bakerloo and Jubilee lines – 3 stops to Bond Street/Oxford Street) is less than 5 minutes away. You’re wonderfully placed for the arts: The South Bank Centre (Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, Hayward Gallery), The National Theatre, The Old Vic and The Young Vic are all within 10 minutes walk – as are some top class restaurants. The Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament and Big Ben) is within 20 minutes. This location is also close to The City – ideal for corporate lets it also has wifi broadband internet.
The house is the London pied-à-terre of the chief executive (husband) and the finance director (wife) of two separate FTSE listed companies, and their young family. They only use it when they are not in their country residence – the entire wing of an old stately home! It’s arranged over 3 floors and comfortably sleeps a maximum of 8 in a variety of possible combinations: 3 doubles, a small twin, a double sofa bed (in one of the doubles) and an additional futon mattress (no base) that can be laid wherever needed. There are 4 bathrooms. Short stay parking can be arranged for a small additional cost.
The three floors are linked with a stylish spiral staircase – smaller suitcases are recommended as they are easier to handle up and down this staircase. It has attractive wooden flooring throughout and is simply furnished with contemporary furniture. The front door opens onto a well-lit hallway with limestone tiled floor. On the ground floor is a good-sized (16ft x 14ft9, 4.9m x 4.5m) double bedroom room with a double bed (4ft6 wide), a sofa which converts to a double bed and en-suite bathroom – double shower, basin and loo. Built-in cupboards give ample storage space.
The small twin bedroom is also on this floor. The second bathroom on this floor (shower, basin and loo) also doubles as a utility room with washing machine and separate dryer.
The living area, dining area and kitchen are on the first floor. Being arranged on three sides round the central stair-well they are three distinct areas with the kitchen not visible from the living area. The living area (19ft x 13ft, 5.8m x 4m) has 3 comfortable 2 seater sofas arranged round a low table and a TV (cable channels). There’s a stereo with a variety of CDs – mainly pop music spanning the last 20 years.
The dining area (9ft x 8ft6, 2.8m x 2.6m) has a glass dining table and 6 attractive modern chairs. The kitchen has all the expected appliances including microwave and dishwasher.
Ground floor bedroom with two single beds. The third and fourth double bedrooms are on the second (top) floor, each has its own ensuite bathroom. The third bedroom (17ft x 10ft6, 5.2m x 3.2m) has an ensuite bathroom with bath + over-shower, basin and loo. The fourth (17ft x 9ft9, 5.2m x 3m) has an ensuite with walk-in shower, basin and loo.
As well as being in a great position for the arts and the sights there is no shortage of convenience stores close by and some excellent restaurants too. For good value and great food try RSJ, who also run cookery workshops. For a big treat there’s the OXO Tower where both the formal restaurant and more relaxed brasserie and bar have stunning views across the Thames to Charing Cross and the City of London.
