Images of London

London

Now is the time to seek out those late booking flight bargains to London and there are two very special reasons to go in August and September - it's the only time you can get to go inside two of London's most famous and historic buildings - Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament).

The State Rooms at Buckingham Palace will be open daily from 26 July to 30 September. This is the ONLY time the public can see the inside of Buckingham Palace - The Queen's official residence in London. More details and tickets via http://www.royalcollection.org.uk.

The Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament) will open from 3 August - 3 October, with tours operating every few minutes. While British citizens can arrange to go any time, the Houses of Parliament are ONLY open to foreign visitors between these dates. More details and tickets via: http://www.parliament.uk/visiting/visitingandtours.cfm.

(1)
The Sir John Soane's Museum is named after the son of a bricklayer who died in 1837 after a long and distinguished career as an architect. He designed this central London house to live in, but also as a setting for his antiquities and his works of art - an eclectic and fascinating collection of sculptures, paintings, antiquities, jewellery and other bits and pieces collected by him.
(2)That Apsley House, home of the first Duke of Wellington (he beat Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo) and his descendants, stands right in the heart of London at Hyde Park Corner. For over 200 years this great metropolitan mansion has been known colloquially as 'Number 1 London', because it was the first house encountered after passing the tollgates at the top of Knightsbridge. Inside Apsley House you will see many aspects of the first duke's life and work, outstandingly his amazing art collection. Paris

Bastille Day - 14 July is France's most important national holiday. It commemorates the storming of the Bastille, a notorious high security prison, and marks the beginning of the French Revolution. Celebrations and huge firework displays take place all over France but none greater than in Paris. Crowds line the Champs Elysées where a large military parade makes its way from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde led by the president. Festivities continue all day and in the evening the city is illuminated by fireworks. The largest of these displays can be seen at the Eiffel Tower where crowds gather on the Champs de Mars. Most clubs and bars organise their own celebrations so if you want to end the night dancing or listening to music you can take you pick! Be there if you can.

A good reason to visit Paris in August is that it's blissfully quiet as most Parisians have the month off. Although a few cafés might close, those that stay open are very happy to have your business. You'll always find a seat on the Métro and your local boulangerie will never run out of your favourite bread. Many Parisians who remain in Paris claim that August is their favourite month, as it is the only time they truly get to discover their own city without the usual population hassles!

(1) Napoleon's Tomb is located in the Eglise du Dome at the Hotel des Invalides. The church is a lesson in architectural pomp, with Corinthian columns and pilasters, and grandiose frescoes. Napoleon lies in a giant hole in a sarcophagus of deep red quartzite. The place is awesomely immodest, a must see!
(2) That "La Défense", positioned 6km from the Arc de Triomphe and completing the western axis of the monumental east-west vista known as the "voie triomphale" (triumphal way), is the awe inspiring and beautiful 112metre hollow cube arch, clad in white marble. It could easily enclose the Notre Dame church within its walls and has become one of Paris's most famous monuments.
